Senior Database Administrator & Developer (PostgreSQL)

We are looking for a versatile Database Administrator & Developer who doesn’t just “keep the lights on,” but actively builds and optimizes the engines that power our applications.

In this role, you will bridge the gap between pure system management and high-level database development. You’ll be responsible for the entire lifecycle of our PostgreSQL environments—from architecting schema designs and writing complex functions to fine-tuning Linux kernels and ensuring 99.99% uptime.

Database Development & Optimization:

  • Schema Design: Design and implement robust, scalable relational schemas and data models.
  • Advanced SQL: Write and optimize complex queries, triggers, and stored procedures (PL/pgSQL).
  • Performance Tuning: Use EXPLAIN ANALYZE and other profiling tools to identify bottlenecks and optimize indexing strategies.
  • Migration Management: Lead data migrations, version upgrades, and ETL process development.

System Management & Administration:

  • Infrastructure: Install, configure, and maintain PostgreSQL instances on Linux-based environments (On-prem or Cloud).
  • High Availability: Implement and manage replication (Physical/Logical), failover mechanisms (Patroni, Repmgr), and load balancing (PgBouncer).
  • Backup & Recovery: Design and test rigorous Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR) and disaster recovery strategies using tools like pgBackRest or Barman.
  • Security: Manage user roles, permissions, row-level security (RLS), and encryption at rest/transit.

Monitoring & Automation:

  • Set up proactive monitoring and alerting (Prometheus, Grafana, or pgWatch2).
  • Automate routine maintenance tasks (Vacuuming, Reindexing) using configuration management tools like Ansible, Terraform, or Puppet.
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience managing production PostgreSQL environments.
  • Linux Mastery: Strong command of Linux internals, shell scripting (Bash), and OS-level tuning for database performance.
  • Deep PostgreSQL Knowledge: Expert-level understanding of MVCC, WAL, and PostgreSQL configuration parameters.
  • Development Background: Proficient in at least one backend language (Python, Go, or Java) to assist in application-tier integration.
  • Soft Skills: A “measure twice, cut once” mentality with the ability to communicate technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with PostGIS for geospatial data.
  • Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes/CloudNativePG).
  • Experience managing “Very Large Databases” (VLDB) in the multi-terabyte range.

Why Join Us? You won’t just be running scripts; you’ll be an architect of our data strategy. We value automation over manual intervention and performance over “good enough.”
